We started the day with a trip up to Kerrville, where we had lunch at Buzzie's Bar-B-Que. The chicken was great. The brisket? Terribly disappointing. The sides were just ho-hum. On the whole, I didn't think the place lived up to a spot on Texas Monthly's latest 50 best 'cue spots. Buzzie's was immaculate, though... which counts for something when traveling with a small child.
Before and after lunch, we drove around town a bit. The setting is beautiful. But, as is the case with many small towns, it appears that much of the old architectural charm was stripped out in the '70s for newer buildings. There are exceptions, but with the recent relocation of a downtown hospital, the town center seems... eerily empty. (The Daily Times reports a sale to San Antonio developers is pending. I sure hope it goes through!)
From Kerrville, we took a 22-mile trip up to Fredericksburg and popped into the famed herb farm. It was late in the day on a Sunday... and late in the season, too. They appear to be switching owners...even their web site is down. Thus, there was hardly a soul around, which was fine with us. In the shop, the staffer was making candles. The fragrance was divine.
Finally, with our kid resting in the backseat, we skipped window shopping on Main Street, opting instead to take a nice, slow drive back down South.
